Why Our Cases Are Made With High-Impact ABS & Polycarbonate

At S3 Cases, our aim is to produce the highest quality impact-resistant protective cases and provide our customers with the protection they need for any application. Extensive research and testing led us to choose the two primary materials for our cases, high-impact ABS (Acrylonitrile, Butadiene, Styrene) and medical grade polycarbonate.

Both of these materials allow us to deliver some of the strongest and most durable products available on the market. ABS is used for our opaque, colored cases, while our clear cases are made with polycarbonate. Each of these plastics, or engineered resins as they are known within the industry, provide a variety of benefits and advantages to ensure the highest level of protection.

Why Did We Choose ABS and Polycarbonate?

S3 Cases was launched to meet the need and demand of hard-sided cases for OEM manufacturers of all industries. As such, our company was founded on a commitment to unmatched quality and supreme product protection for numerous applications, from handheld devices to medical devices and tactical equipment.

Our goal was to create a product that would protect any valuable item from the most extreme external elements and conditions. Extensive testing led us to the confidence that high-impact ABS and polycarbonate would meet the standards we had set forth.

Using these plastics through a state-of-the-art injection molding process has allowed us to produce hard-sided cases that are resistant to impact, temperature, dust, and water while still remaining lightweight. These plastics also provide us with the flexibility to offer customization so that our customers receive a case that is uniquely designed to fit their individual products without sacrificing on the quality of protection.

More About High-Impact ABS

All of our opaque, colored cases are manufactured with high-impact ABS.

ABS is a hard, rigid, and tough thermoplastic material. Thermoplastic materials become extremely soft or moldable when they are heated up to certain temperature or melting point and then harden and solidify as they cool. These materials can be cycled through the process of heating and cooling and heating again without being affected by a significant level of degradation. Because of this, ABS can be melted and recast countless times.

These unique properties allow for machinability and thermoforming capabilities that are crucial for success in an injection molding process. In injection molding manufacturing, heated material is injected into a mold to produce products of custom shapes and sizes.  At S3 Cases, we chose to produce our cases through injection molding because it allowed us to create products that were made to customized specifications. The cost and availability of ABS provided us with an easily obtainable material that could be modified and recycled, allowing us versatility for mass production without compromising on quality.

More important than the ease of production, ABS provides incredible properties that make it the perfect choice for a custom protective case. ABS is extremely durable with high tensile strength and outstanding dimensional stability. It offers strong resistance to impact, corrosive materials, chemicals, dust, heat, water, and scratches. It is lightweight, but very shock absorbent.

More About Medical Grade Polycarbonate

All of our clear cases are manufactured with medical grade polycarbonate.

Polycarbonate is another engineered thermoplastic material, however, it is naturally transparent. Like ABS, polycarbonate can be heated to its melting point, cooled, and then heated again without significant degradation, making it another invaluable choice for injection molding.

Polycarbonate is considered to be one of the toughest materials on the market and is most used for the production of a wide variety of medical devices, but it is also a top choice for safety helmets, riot shields, automotive components, machinery guards, digital disks, eyewear, and much more. Polycarbonate is strong, durable, and virtually indestructible. It offers high resistance to chemicals, heat, and impact. It is lightweight, but excellently suited for extreme conditions, harsh environments, and even rough use.
