S3 Cases are lightweight, space-efficient, and sturdy, but any case latch can break because of a fall or other hard contact. What happens when you need a latch replacement? Fortunately, removing a broken latch and replacing it with a functional one is easy and affordable. Here’s a step-by-step guide for removing your broken latch and replacing it:
Materials
- S3 Cases replacement latch
- Hammer
- ½-inch wide, six-inch long PVC pipe
- Firm but padded surface
Step 1: Removing the Broken Latch
Before you can begin latch replacement, you’ll have to get that broken latch off the case. Start by placing the case on a padded surface, such as a carpet. Open the case and set it down with the handle facing you.
Next, take a ½ inch wide, six inches long PVC pipe and set it where the latch meets the case.
Using a hammer, tap the PVC pipe to dislodge the latch. PVC pipe works best, but any object that fits in the latch channel will minimize damage.
Step 2: Installing the New Latch
Now that the broken latch has been dislodged, close the case and turn it over so that the top is on the padded surface. Make sure the handle is still facing you.
Take your new latch and extend (or open) it. You should see the teeth inside.
Place the latch on the case so that only the latch base is touching the case. Press it onto the teeth firmly but not excessively hard.
You can use the PVC pipe to press the latch back onto the case. Tap the PVC pipe with the hammer to secure the latch back into place.
Step 3: Test and Adjust
To see if your latch is installed properly (before you try to close your belongings in it), you’ll need to determine if the latch is properly seated in place. This can be done in two ways. While the latch is open, look for a gap between the latch and the case. The gap can be hard to see, so check carefully for even the smallest space between the case and the latch. The first image below with the red box shows a gap between the latch and the case.
If there’s a gap, use the PVC pipe again to tap it in further. Or, close the case and attempt to latch it. If there’s any difficulty in closing the latch, you’ll need to tap it into place. The second image below with the green box shows little to no gap between the latch and the case.
Follow these instructions, and you’ll fix your latch in no time.
